I was reading one of my favorite humor sites Not Always Right and had to wince in pain. The site is not exactly pro-Christian but neither is the world. I can deal with that. Sometimes they see our hypocrisy very clearly. The offering they gave is called "Casting the First Stone." It points out that if we were serious about observing a day of rest and expecting people to come to church, maybe we should stop shopping on Sunday. I have said this often about going out to eat on Sunday.
I have run into this with people who say they are required to work on Sunday. I can understand it if you are a policeman or a pharmacist. Many jobs though would not require you to work on Sunday if the church goer's would simply stop shopping on Sunday.
I note that this is an observation of a pagan, not my being judgmental.

Welcome to Varied Expressions of Worship
This blog will be written from an orthodox Christian point of view. There may be some topic that is out of bounds, but at present I don't know what it will be. Politics is a part of life. Theology and philosophy are disciplines that we all participate in even if we don't think so. The Bible has a lot to say about economics. How about self defense? Is war ethical? Think of all the things that someone tells you we should not touch and let's give it a try. Everything that is a part of life should be an expression of worship.
Keep it courteous and be kind to those less blessed than you, but by all means don't worry about agreeing. We learn more when we get backed into a corner.

Well that would be okay, I guess, except that God made the Sabbath on Saturday and God never changed it; an early pope did.
ReplyDeleteYou got me there. I think the early church met daily and celebrated the resurrection on Sunday. Imagine, a weekly Easter.
ReplyDeleteAlways good to hear from you.
Grace and peace.
And then there's that issue about the term "Easter!" (Okay, I'll quit bugging you for entertainment.) ;-)
ReplyDeleteYour original point of the post is valid; we Christians sometimes operate in childish ignorance of our own hypocracy.
Always glad to play the fool. How does the saying go, "Post in haste, repent in leisure" or something like that.
ReplyDeleteDon't people with no sense of humor drive you crazy?
Grace and peace.
In the town where I live in Queensland, Australia almost everything is closed on a Sunday. I don't wash or do hardly anything on Sunday, or Good Friday, Easter Sunday or Christmas day.. to me, these days are Holy. Blessings brother.
ReplyDeleteWe need to remember that Jesus said the Sabbath was made for man. It is a day of rest. God has a reason for all that He does. I have made stabs at making Saturday my Sabbath and Sunday my worship day. It seems like we get so busy on the Lord's day that we don't get much rest. I haven't made it work yet, but I keep hoping.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your input.
Grace and peace.
