Mary is one of the key figures in the Christmas story. One of the things I like about her is that we are reminded that it is possible to live a life that God approves of. Notice how Gabriel greeted her.
(Luk 1:28 KJV) And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. If this had been written by a five-point Calvinist is would have read, “Hail, thou that art lost in sin...”
The Catholics of course go to the other extreme and believe that Mary was born without sin.
Somewhere in between is the young woman that the Bible describes as “highly favoured” and “blessed”.
Mary was also a descendent of David. This is the genetic track which puts Jesus in line for the throne of David and sets up all kinds of interesting prophecies for the crowd that loves prophecy.
